IEC 61915 Ed. 1.0 (2003-03) - Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear - Principles for the development of device profiles for networked industrial devices
Defines a framework for common representation of networked industrial devices and provides a template for documenting such a representation, independent of the network used. NOTE 1- The device profile format specified in this technical specification is compatible with devices connected to both bit- and byte-oriented networks. IEC product committees should use this technical specification in the preparation of root device profiles for their products. NOTE 2- Manufacturers or user organisations may use the rules defined in this technical specification to develop ""root device profiles"" for use within their own organisations. Product manufacturers should use the root device profiles developed by product committees together with the rules defined in this technical specification in order to create manufacturer's device profiles to represent and describe their devices. This technical specification allows manufacturers to make manufacturer-specific extensions to the root device profiles developed by product committees. Where no suitable root device profile exists, the manufacturer can develop manufacturer's device profiles using the rules defined in this technical specification. This technical specification recommends the use of a profile exchange language for representation of the device profile information in order to facilitate the profile's use by network tools and application software. NOTE 3- The types of devices may vary from simple devices, such as pilot lights, push-buttons and limit switches, to more complex devices with many bytes of information, such as motor controllers, semiconductor motor starters, etc. SFr. 187.00

IEC 61511-3 Ed. 1.0 (2003-03) - Functional safety - Safety instrumented systems for the process industry sector - Part 3: Guidance for the determination of the required safety integrity levels
Provides information on the underlying concepts of risk, the relationship of risk to safety integrity, the determination of tolerable risk and a number of different methods that enable the safety integrity levels for the safety instru-mented functions to be determined.
Experts in IEC Subcommittee 65A (System aspects) explain that this sector specific standard of IEC 61508 addresses the functional safety of safety instrumented systems (SIS) for the process sector. "The purpose is to ensure that the safety integrity of safety instrumented systems is adequate taking into account the associated hazards & risks. It falls under the generic IEC 61508 standard and thus required adjustment to the requirements found in IEC 61508 (generic in content since it covers all sectors) to cover process sector needs."
The standard will mainly be used by integrators and operators of chemical, petro-chemical and gas process plants. It also has applications in non-nuclear power generation. It will also be used as a benchmark by those responsible for assessing the adequacy of such plants including certification bodies and regulators. Part three is informative and provides outlines of several global approaches to hazard and risk analysis found in the process sector. It is not intended to define a single method as acceptable, but to list some of the acceptable methods in use today. In this way, it serves to enhance communication and understanding amongst global process sector safety decision-makers.
